Book Review: The Biology of Belief by Bruce H Lipton

That we humans are ‘programmable devices’ is an established truth. Humans resemble computers is no-brainer. This stems from a study of human Psychology. As an L&D Professional I have been driving this in to the minds of my young audience. But thrillingly, now Biology also goes to prove that it is NOT just Nature through DNA, but also Nurture (by learning), which matters in changing human reality. Finally, if there is any iota of doubt (of Nature Vs Nurture), it has been settled, once and for all.

If you thought our genes control our lives, Nope. This path-breaking book reveals that genes are just blueprints and cannot turn themselves on or off. Whereas the environment, including our perception, thought and belief, ‘activate’ our genes. Bruce proves in his paradigm-smashing book that “it’s the environment, stupid!” The author is a not a charlatan, but through fundamental research establishes the Universal Truth. That the Universe is one indivisible, dynamic whole in which energy and matter are so deeply entangled.

I was allergic to reading anything technical. But the author gently removed my mental block by taking me through Cellular and Molecular Biology using simple metaphors. For example, our biological cell is a ticking clock and the proteins make it ‘tick’. The interaction of cells with the environment is explained using a “butter sandwich” with olives analogy and the Spirit-Body connect using the example of the Television Set.

Bruce makes it an enjoyable reading even for a layman. He does this by taking the biological cell down to its fundamental nuts and bolts. An exciting journey into our cell, indeed. Don’t judge this book going by its title. This is NOT a self-help book, but in fact a cell-help-book based on sound research on Cellular Intelligence in the recent decades. The author also shows where Biology, the hardware & Belief, the software, meet.

Bruce Lipton also goes to establish that the Nucleus which holds our DNA blueprint is NOT the Hero, but the actively learning layer of Membrane Protein is the brain of the cell. Thus, the Primacy of the DNA remains crumbled. It’s not Genetics but Epigenetics which is the New Science of Self-Empowerment.

What is more enjoyable is that the book is written in an autobiographical style with a personal and almost confessional touch in that Bruce narrates the various ‘aha’ moments of his life that challenged his own and others scientists’ beliefs in Biology. Did you ever get goosebumps reading anything other than fiction? I got reading this even as I reflected on the truth of Newton or Archimedes’ experience of epiphany in silence, when Bruce also ‘discovers’ the Truth in a Caribbean Island, far away from the maddening routine of American city life.

“In the last decade”, as the author says, “epigenetic research has established that DNA blueprints passed down through genes are not set in concrete at birth. Genes are not destiny! Environmental influences, including nutrition, stress and emotions, can modify those genes without changing their basic blueprint. And those modifications, epigeneticists have discovered, can be passed on to future generations as surely as DNA blueprints are passed on via the double helix.”

Like the Copernicus’ paradigm-busting discovery in astronomy, Bruce Lipton has turned upside down the stone-cast “Commandments of Biology” from the established “DNA-RNA-Protein” hierarchy to the newly inverted sequence of “Environmental Signal-Regulatory Protein-DNA-RNA-Protein”, thus busting the Darwin’s Dogma that DNA is ‘everything’.

To end, in the authors’ own words: “..let me reiterate the lessons of the Magical Membrane, which put the control of our lives not in the genetic roll of the dice at conception but in our own hands. We are drivers of our own biology, just as I am the driver of this word processing program. We have the ability to edit the data we enter into our biocomputers, just as surely as I can choose the words I type. When we understand how IMPs control biology, we become masters of our fate, not victims of our genes.

Funnily, if you think, by reading this book, your destiny will change, here’s a Warning from the author: “Your children’s genes reflect only their potential, not their destiny. It is up to you to provide the environment that allows them to develop to their highest potential. Notice I do not say that it is up to parents to read lots of parenting books. I’ve met lots of people who are intellectually attracted to the ideas I present in this book. But intellectual interest is not enough. I tried that myself. I was intellectually aware of everything in this book, but before I made the effort to change, it made no impact on my life. If you simply read this book and think that your life and your children’s lives will change, you’re doing the equivalent of accepting the latest pharmaceutical pill thinking it will “fix” everything. No one is fixed until they make the effort to change.

Read on….this will ‘change’ your view of the life cell.
